1. Stay off the roof
Wet shingles and broken pieces are slippery. You can spot most hail damage from the ground, and a roofer can check the rest.
2. Look for these signs from the ground
- Dents in gutters, downspouts, and roof vents
- Dings on window screens, siding, or the AC unit
- Shingle granules piling up where the downspouts drain
- Missing or cracked shingles in the yard
- New water stains on ceilings
3. If water is getting in, tarp it now
A tarp keeps a small problem from turning into a ceiling and drywall problem. We tarp roofs 24/7. Call or text 719-358-6484.
4. Get a free inspection before you file
A roofer can tell you if there is real damage before you open a claim. We take photos and send you a written report, so you know what is there.
5. File your claim, and do not wait too long
Insurance policies have deadlines for storm claims. Once you file, the insurance company sends an adjuster. We meet the adjuster at the house and point out the damage we found.
6. Watch out for storm chasers
After a big storm, crews from out of state knock on doors. Red flags: out-of-state plates, no local office, pressure to sign today, and offers to cover or waive your deductible. In Colorado, a roofer cannot pay or waive your deductible.
When does hail hit here?
From 2015 through 2025, the National Weather Service logged 809 hail reports in El Paso County. Almost all of them came between May and August, with June and July the busiest. See the year-by-year chart on our hail damage page.
